Energy Saving Devices
VICUSdt offers advanced consulting services in the design and implementation of Energy Saving Devices (ESDs) aimed at enhancing the propulsion efficiency of ships. Since 2007, and with over 1,500 projects completed in more than 50 countries, VICUSdt combines Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations with structural analysis to deliver customized solutions that reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Pre-Swirl Stators (PSS)
PSS consists of fins installed in front of the propeller to modify its inlet flow, improving rotational performance. While well-established and widely adopted in the industry, the performance and reliability of these systems have been significantly enhanced through the use of advanced CFD and Finite Element Method (FEM) analyses. Designing PSS requires detailed hydrodynamic optimization and structural analysis to ensure durability and avoid resonance phenomena. Properly implemented, PSS can achieve 3–6% improvements in propulsive efficiency.
Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF)
Replacing the conventional propeller cap with a finned cap helps recover energy from the propeller's hub vortex. Made typically of bronze, PBCFs can be installed during docking or even underwater. CFD simulations are used to optimize the size, angle, and profile of the fins, achieving fuel savings between 0.5% and 2%.
Twisted Rudders and Bulbs
Modifying the rudder's leading edge and adding a bulb can recover rotational energy from the propeller's hub vortex, improving propulsion efficiency. Retrofitting existing rudders with these features can yield improvements between 1% and 5%.
Pre-Duct Systems
The Pre-Duct is a nozzle installed upstream of the propeller to improve the inlet flow, thereby enhancing propulsion efficiency. CFD-based design is essential, as an improperly designed Pre-Duct can increase drag and negatively affect propeller performance. Suitable for full-shaped vessels operating at low speeds, such as tankers and bulk carriers, the Pre-Duct can achieve 2–6% improvements in propulsion efficiency.
Tailored Implementation and Support
VICUSdt provides end-to-end services for ESD integration, including feasibility studies, hydrodynamic and structural design, manufacturing coordination, and technical support during installation. Their objective, data-driven approach ensures that each solution is customized to the vessel's specific characteristics and operational profile, delivering measurable efficiency gains and compliance with environmental regulations.
